On November 15-19, Kazan Federal University is hosting the Kazan International Linguistic Summit “Language Diversity in the Global World” (KILS-2021).
The Kazan International Linguistic Summit is being held at the Kazan Federal University for the second time and is an important stage in the preparation for the International Congress of Linguists (ICL). In the summer of 2020, it became known that the Kazan Federal University, in partnership with the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, won the right to host the world’s main scientific linguistic forum in 2023 – the International Congress of Linguists (ICL), held every five years. The Congress will be chaired by KFU Rector Ilshat Gafurov and Director of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrey Kibrik.
About 600 people will take part in the Summit on the online platform. The Summit participants represent more than 20 countries, including Russia, the USA, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Iran, Germany, Poland, Singapore, Japan, Israel, China, Kazakhstan and many others. From 15 to 19 November, participants will have a unique opportunity to listen to the speeches of world famous linguists and editors-in-chief of prestigious research journals, make presentations in subject sections, and participate in discussions.

In his welcoming speech, Ilshat Gafurov noted that the choice of the site of one of the leading universities in the country for holding such a prestigious and significant event was a logical decision, since the traditions of Kazan University are deeply rooted in the history of scientific schools, a significant place among which is occupied by the Kazan Linguistic School, headed by an outstanding linguist Ivan Alexandrovich Baudouin de Courtenay.
“This school has made an invaluable contribution to the development of world linguistics and glorified the city of Kazan and Kazan University. For a century and a half, the theoretical ideas of the representatives of this school have had a beneficial effect on the development of linguistics. In the world academic community, the Kazan Linguistic School is recognized as a model for predicting the science of language: its representatives were the first to apply mathematical models in linguistics, predicted the introduction of the mathematical apparatus into linguistic research, which ultimately led to the active development of mathematical and later computational linguistics – one of the areas in demand today in the specified scientific field “, – said the rector of the Kazan Federal University.
Great-grandson L.N. Tolstoy Vladimir Tolstoy noted that leading linguistic scientists from all over the world will take part in this event, and the Summit is a serious platform for preparing the International Congress of Linguists in 2023.
One of the co-organizers of the Kazan International Linguistic Summit “Language Diversity in the Global World” (KILS – 2021) is the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“Holding an international congress of linguists is, of course, a very serious and responsible initiative. It is one of the largest linguistic forums that exist. I am very grateful to my Kazan colleagues, who last year came up with the idea of such rehearsals for this congress, summits, in which the Institute of Linguistics also takes part. The last summit was very indicative, it passed successfully, and I think that the current summit will be even more interesting and fruitful, ”says Andrei Kibrik.
During the plenary session, the director of the IFMK KFU, Radif Zamaletdinov, acquainted the audience with the activities of the institute, interdisciplinary research laboratories, and projects in the field of linguistics. Radif Rifkatovich noted that in world linguistics Kazan and the Kazan Federal University are associated with the Kazan linguistic school.
“In world linguistics, the Kazan Linguistic School is recognized as an example of predicting the science of language. It was its representatives who were the first to apply mathematical models in linguistics, which ultimately led to the active development of mathematical, and subsequently, to computational linguistics at Kazan University and beyond. It was in Kazan that one of the most important areas of linguistics appeared – experimental phonetics, the achievements of which are now used in various fields from the correction of speech pathology to the creation of tools for the analysis and synthesis of speech, ”he explained.
During the summit, linguists will discuss issues of paleoslavlistics, traditional linguistics and its digital transformation, clinical and neurolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, computational and corpus linguistics, and other varieties of linguistics.
