One of the leading research institutions in the area of linguistics, which is a part of the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Institute conducts fundamental, exploratory and applied research in the following areas: the development of Russian lexicology and lexicography, compilation and publication of dictionaries; development of fundamental questions on the theory of linguistics, comparative-historical, areal, linguo-geographic and sociolinguistic studies on the material of various languages; study of early-written and non-written languages of the peoples of the Far North, Siberia, the Far East; development of the theory of grammar and linguistic typology of languages based on the material of the world’s languages.
